Former TSA employee convicted of murder in co-worker’s killing

Ruben Orlando Benitez, a former management-level official for the Transportation Security Administration, will serve life in prison for the September 2011 stabbing death of a co-worker at her D’Iberville home.

Authorities said Benitez’s co-worker Stacey Wright was stabbed 12 times. The stabbing occurred, authorities said, after the two got into an argument at Wright’s home at Landmark Apartments in D’Iberville on Sept. 17, 2011.

After his arrest, Benitez told authorities that he killed Wright after the two argued about her wanting to end an affair between them. Benitez told investigators in a taped interview that he couldn’t bear the thought of losing her.

At trial, however, Benitez testified the stabbing occurred after Wright charged toward him with an unknown object. He said the two had been arguing over money.
