Haley Barbour: Mourdock rape claim ‘kinda crazy’

Richard Mourdock’s statement that pregnancies resulting from rape are intended by God is “kinda crazy,” Haley Barbour said Thursday, but added that voters and the press should focus on the economy.

“I don’t agree with what he said,” Barbour said on CBS’s “This Morning. “I thought what he said was kinda crazy. But having said that, this election for president is not about that.”

Mourdock, the Republican candidate for Senate in Indiana, was trying to explain his opposition to rape exceptions in abortion bans during a debate Tuesday when he suggested pregnancies resulting from rape are “something that God intended to happen.” Mourdock said Wednesday he was simply saying that all life is a gift from God, but Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has called on him to apologize.
