Mississippi’s Official Website, ms.gov, Ranks Top Five in the Nation Among Government Websites

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 15, 2012

JACKSON – The state’s website, ms.gov, was rated as one of the top government websites in the nation. The Center for Digital Government awarded ms.gov a fifth-place ranking in its prestigious Best of the Web competition, and it’s the first time in more than a decade that the state’s site has secured such an honor.

Mississippi’s site was evaluated on a number of areas including overall innovation, web-based delivery of public services, efficiency and functionality.

“The new ms.gov has facilitated and improved citizen interaction with government through the latest advances in digital technology,” Governor Phil Bryant said. “We are extremely honored that the Center has distinguished Mississippi as a national leader in eGovernment.”

The state’s official website was redesigned in January 2012 at no cost to the state or citizens utilizing a self-funded model with Mississippi’s eGovernment partner, Mississippi Interactive (MSI). The site’s sleek new design and complementary mobile application incorporate innovative enhancements including interactive GeoIP mapping, statewide social media aggregation and live help.

The site serves as a gateway to important government information through a highly usable search interface which enables users to quickly find services and information about transparency, employment, tourism, education and government.

Dr. Craig Orgeron, Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services Executive Director said, “The focus of this website directly reflects the Governor’s support for efficiencies in government and we are thrilled with this recognition.”

Ten months after the official launch, ms.gov continues to receive positive feedback and numerous awards. This year, along with the highly coveted Best of the Web Award, the site has received three Communicator Awards from the International Academy of the Visual Arts and an Interactive Media Award from the Interactive Media Council, Inc. Meanwhile, the mobile version of the site was bestowed with a National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) Recognition Award.

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute on information technology and best practices in state and local government.
