Students with disabilities have been disproportionately suspended and placed in alternative school at higher rates than their peers.
Those with learning disabilities don’t receive the help they need, so they fall further behind. They’ve been unlawfully removed from their classrooms, denied services that would help with their disabilities, and denied the free and appropriate public education guaranteed to them by federal law.
Those are allegations made specifically against Jackson Public Schools, but advocates for students with disabilities say similar problems occur across the state.
