District 19 State Senate race heats up

The race to fill the District 19 State Senate seat which will be vacated by Sen. Merle Flowers, R-Olive Branch in July, is heating up with the announcement that at least two individuals plan to run for the post.

Southaven resident Michael J. Smith, longtime educator, former Southaven alderman candidate and founder of the DeSoto County African-American History Symposium, said Monday he plans to seek the post when a special election date is set.

On Friday, longtime Entergy official and current State Rep. Pat Nelson, R-Southaven, announced he planned to run for the seat presently held by Flowers.
