DeSoto officials’ D.C. trip fruitful

DeSoto County officials are bushed this weekend after returning Friday from Thursday’s all-day round of talks in Washington with the state’s congressional delegation.

“But I was glad to be tired,” said Supervisor Lee Caldwell of Nesbit. “I think we got a lot accomplished,” she said of pledges of support to prevent an ozone “non-attainment” listing by the Environmental Protection Agency, obtain transportation funds, amend a homeless-student law and pursue other priorities.

At the annual congressional “blue ribbon” briefing, the 19-member DeSoto team of city and county leaders, development officials, engineers and others met with U.S. Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee and the state’s other three House members.
