Desoto County gets Miss. delegation support in fight with EPA
DeSoto County’s congressional delegation, taking aim at EPA’s “misguided” proposal to list the county with Memphis as falling short on ozone standards, has called on agency chief Lisa Jackson to clear the air by reversing the plan.
“This plan is problematic not only on an environmental basis, but also on the grounds that it fails to give adequate consideration to the economic impact on this area of Mississippi,” U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran said Wednesday. “The Environmental Protection Agency is misguided in this instance and should withdraw DeSoto County.”
DeSoto Supervisor Mark Gardner, part of a state-county team that appealed for intervention, said: “We’ve made our case and now we’ll see where this goes. I’m tremendously hopeful.”
