Want to carry a gun to the courthouse, on a college campus or in a bar in Mississippi?
A gun owner with a concealed carry permit who takes an eight-hour class may be able to do just that, under a little-known law the state Legislature approved this year.
The new law, which took effect July 1, sets up an enhanced concealed carry program to allow weapons where they previously have been banned. The Department of Public Safety has been working to carry out House Bill 506.
A separate law currently on the books still appears to prohibit a courthouse, college campus or bar. But the attorney general’s office has interpreted that the new law allows guns in the new locations. Also, courts often defer to the most recent law.
