Pickering orders Clarke County to disperse restitution funds
In mid-August, officials from the state auditor’s office gave Clarke County Circuit Clerk Beth Jordan thirty days to disperse almost a quarter of a million dollars to the rightful owners. It was money that had been paid in by criminals as restitution for victims.
No money was being stolen or misappropriated, but the problem was how records were being kept. This resulted in
those funds not getting to crime victims, some cases dating back to the early 1990s.
”It’s really inexcusable that we have that many people, over 100 individuals, that have not been reimbursed with the restitution that they are due,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering.
The order is the culmination of an almost six month long investigation involving the office.
