Kenneth Stokes sponsors item to audit Farish Street Project

Kenneth Stokes sponsors to audit Farish Street Project

Developer David Watkins questioned Wednesday why the Jackson City Council voted for an audit of the Farish Street Historic District.

“It’s ludicrous,” said Watkins, who guided the successful restoration of the King Edward Hotel in downtown Jackson. “An audit of what? There is no city money.”

On Tuesday, council members voted 4-2 for an internal audit of the Farish Street Historic District – what amounts to a protest vote since the city attorney said there was no city money in the project and that development falls under the Jackson Redevelopment Authority.

Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes, who sponsored the item on the council’s agenda, said once the council had voted, the audit “must be carried out, or someone is guilty of malfeasance in office.”
