DuPree Gets Thompson’s Endorsement

Today, the Johnny DuPree campaign announced they have received probably the most coveted endorsement for the Democratic primary in the state with Rep. Bennie Thompson formally backing the Hattiesburg mayor over Bill Luckett. Interestingly, Luckett lives in Thompson’s Delta-based Second District, DuPree does not.

I have said that I expected the black political structure in the state to eventually line up behind DuPree, but it hadn’t happened yet. I would think that the Thompson endorsement will speed up that process with senators, representatives, mayors and other leaders three weeks before the primary. If that happens, Luckett will be very hard-pressed to overcome this despite having the fundraising edge and some nice endorsements of his own.

The full letter from Thompson is below.
