Rep. Jeff Smith drops the D, running as Independent
Rep. Jeff Smith has dropped the ‘D’ and picked up an ‘I’ in his bid for reelection. This has been a long time coming; there is no love loss between Smith and the state Democrats, after Smith challenged Billy McCoy for Speaker back in January 2007.
Smith may have been the last conservative Democrat in Mississippi. Many have noted that Smith only stayed a Democrat out of respect to his family’s history, but he had long left the majority of the party’s ideology. But who you align yourself with matters and Smith knows this all too well.
