Barbour seeks federal emergency declaration

Gov. Haley Barbour said he has asked President Barack Obama for an emergency declaration for the state of Mississippi following two days of tornadoes that killed at least 32 and caused widespread damage to homes and property across northern and central parts of the state.

Barbour also said the Mississippi National Guard has been called to assist in tornado recovery efforts in Monroe County, where 13 people died and which is believed to have been the hardest hit area in the state.

Barbour said state officials continue today working with local officials to support “search, rescue, security and recovery operations in a variety of locations.”
