Simpson’s excuses won’t help campaign
Steve Simpson, the Republican candidate for attorney general, isn’t very good at explaining himself. Earlier this year, he got snippy when quizzed about why he hadn’t filed a campaign finance report. At the time, Simpson, who was serving as Haley Barbour’s public safety commissioner, was dancing around a couple of laws – not only the state requirement to periodically disclose contributions and expenditures over $200, but also a federal statute that forbids political activity by administrators of federal funds.
Now comes a revelation that Simpson was about a year delinquent in paying the local property taxes on his $378,000 Gulfport home. He came up with the $5,760 earlier this year when news of a tax lien on his home began circulating.
