Lack of cell phone service dangerous in N. Miss., officials say

Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley is on the warpath to make sure North Mississippi’s rural communities have adequate cell phone service.

Presley, who represents DeSoto County and the rest of northern Mississippi on the PSC, is kicking off a “Connecting Rural North Mississippi” tour this week to draw attention to the issue. He said wireless service has become an essential public utility.

“Wireless service is as important to rural families today as roads and running water was 50 years ago,” he said. “Rural communities and counties should not be left out of expansions of service and coverage, and that’s why I want to bring representatives of these companies to the places that are having the most problems.”
