Prospects not promising for redistricting dilemma
JACKSON — DeSoto County supervisors face an uphill battle in their efforts to push back the March 1 election qualifying deadline so they can redistrict the county to reflect its explosive growth over the last decade.
A delegation traveled to Jackson last week in hopes of persuading legislators to at least single out DeSoto County, which is expected to show the state’s largest population gain when the 2010 Census results are released sometime in February, for an extended candidate filing deadline.
“It’s a numbers game, and we’re outnumbered,” said Sen. Merle Flowers, R-Olive Branch and a member of the Senate Elections Committee.
