Rep. Shows Claims Dems Don’t Welcome White Conservatives
JACKSON, Miss. — When Rep. Bobby Shows left the Democratic Party on Tuesday to become a Republican, he claimed the party didn’t welcome white conservatives, a claim Mississippi Democrats deny.
“The majority leader, Mr. (Tyrone) Ellis, (said) that you can see at this time that there is no room in the Democratic Party for white conservatives, so I am here to be a white conservative Republican,” Shows said during a news conference on Tuesday.
“I would never say such a thing,” Ellis said. “Not only are there white conservatives in the Democratic Party, there are black conservatives.”
