NYT – Gregg Harper votes against Bill recognizing Cam Newton

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 16, 2010

Showing Their True College Colors

House Republicans have already said they will try to change how commemorative resolutions are handled when they take over next Congress. But Wednesday’s vote on Mr. Newton seems to have been more personal.

At least some of the opposition seems to have come from supporters of Auburn’s rivals in college football’s Southeastern Conference. Representative Charles Boustany, a Louisiana Republican, cast his no vote because he backs Louisiana State University, a spokesman said. And the office of Representative Gregg Harper, a Mississippi Republican who voted present on the measure, noted that the congressman’s district includes Mississippi State University.
