Housing: HUD, state reach settlement

A lingering, contentious battle between housing advocates and the state over the use of federal disaster relief housing funds has finally been settled.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Gov. Haley Barbour and attorneys for housing advocates and individuals who filed the lawsuit announced Nov. 16 that $132 million will be made available for storm victims who did not qualify for other federal relief. The new program will target low-income persons, the elderly and the disabled in a nine-county area of the Gulf Coast.
