Cam Newton still gets my vote for the Heisman Trophy
However, for certain members of the media — main-line journalists — to be making judgments on whether Newton should win the Heisman Trophy is incomprehensible and unconscionable.
Mike Bianchi, a sports columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, was first to roll out of bed with a stink bomb under the heading: “Cam Newton Doesn’t Deserve Heisman Trophy.” He pointed to the statement used to describe the award on the Heisman website: “The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity.”
Everyone knows Newton has made mistakes in the past. That’s how he ended up at Auburn in the first place (his third school in three years). Apparently, Bianchi must not be on a first-name basis with the phrase “redemption.”
