AP – Taylor, Palazzo in tough US House race in Miss.

PASCAGOULA, Miss. — Democrat Gene Taylor, who’s facing the toughest re-election campaign of his 21-year congressional career, was on Jackson County Fair midway only a few seconds when a man shook his hand and complained about commercials run by Taylor’s opponent.

Insurance agent John Crittenden of Gulfport said the ads only criticize Taylor without offering a positive alternative.

Taylor nodded and asked: “Doesn’t it make you wonder if he’s ever done anything?”

“He has not put out anything about what he’s done,” Crittenden said, “only what you do.”

In TV ads, billboards and speeches, Republican challenger Steven Palazzo is relentlessly trying to tie Taylor to Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi – a widespread practice in conservative districts as the GOP tries to regain the House majority in next week’s midterm election.

Pinning Taylor to Pelosi might be a tough sell in south Mississippi’s 4th District. Taylor, 57, is a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Caucus and prides himself on independence. He has voted against the Democratic leadership on issues such as the health overhaul that became law this year.
