Jobs potentially moving from Illinois to Miss. after Union vote
A majority of union members insisted Monday that giving concessions to Olin Corp. probably would not have saved their jobs from moving to Mississippi.
“It might have passed if (the contract) had been fully understood by the union members,” said longtime Olin employee Abe Lee Barham Jr., of Alton.
Barham said the language in two paragraphs in the letter is really why many didn’t vote on the deal.
“There was confusion in the letter of agreement that was clearly explained,” he said.
The workers voted Sunday by a 2-to-1 ratio to reject the contract that would have kept Winchester Division jobs in East Alton. In August, the munitions manufacturer announced it was considering moving its Centerfire Manufacturing Operations to Oxford, Miss.
