But seeing Auburn ranked toward the bottom of the Top 25 in both the Associated Press and coaches’ preseason polls didn’t sit well with Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton, especially when that other team (as Newton called it) from the state of Alabama is the consensus No. 1 team in the country.
“Any time you turn on the TV or you turn on the sports talk radio show or anywhere, they’re talking about the other team,” Newton told reporters Sunday. “Of course, we know they’re an excellent team as well. We feel like we’re not being mentioned as we should be.”
Newton and the Tigers will get a chance soon enough to prove that they belong in Alabama’s class. That first SEC game at Mississippi State on Sept. 9 (a Thursday night affair) should start to provide a few answers.
