Cochran says he’ll vote against confirming Kagan

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Both of Mississippi’s U.S. senators are now saying they’ll vote against confirming Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republican Thad Cochran said Wednesday in Washington that Kagan “has not shown that she appreciates the critical distinction between political advocacy and neutral judicial decision-making.”

Republican Roger Wicker said in mid-July that Kagan “demonstrates a troubling tendency to insert her personal beliefs” when considering difficult legal issues.

Kagan is expected to be confirmed. Nearly all Democrats and the Senate’s two independents have said they will support her. At least five Republicans are crossing party lines to support Kagan, who was nominated by President Barack Obama.
