Commercial Appeal – Barbour casino suit could hurt taxpayers
PHILADELPHIA — State Atty. Gen. Jim Hood said Wednesday that Mississippi taxpayers may be liable for damages from a frivolous lawsuit if Gov. Haley Barbour sues Choctaw Indians over their planned gaming facility near here.
Barbour wants to block construction of a facility that he says would contain only slot machines and a snack bar, which is a departure from other Mississippi gaming operations that are coupled with hotel rooms, golf courses and other amenities.
The gaming operation would be built on federally protected tribal land, and the state has no authority to block the development.
A lawsuit against the Indians over the matter could be ruled frivolous, Hood warned.
