SANDERSVILLE — Residents and officials from Jones County – and across the state – are divided on the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians’ plans for a casino near Sandersville.
Some say the casino would create jobs and bring in much-needed tax revenue.
Others argue it would be a threat to the environment, health and safety, and people’s wallets.
Even the Choctaws seem divided on the casino, with the Tribal Council voting 8-7 in June to move forward with the project.
A petition for a vote by the entire Mississippi band was nixed last week because the petition to the Choctaw Election Commission was improperly filed, tribal spokesman Warren Strain said.
