Cowbells: The U.S. Version of the Vuvuzela?
The rule came about when SEC schools decided the noisemakers were “disruptive.” The 10 SEC schools voted with nine in favor of eliminating the cowbell and only one opposing. Rumor has it the tradition began when a cow actually wandered onto the field while Mississippi State was playing in-state rival Ole’ Miss. They won the game that day and, according to the Mississippi State atheltics Web site, students continued bringing cows to the games for good luck. By the 1950’s, the cows were left on the farm, and just the bells made it to the game. By the 1960’s the trend had become a tradition.
