League meetings sizzle with expansion talk
Three reasons the SEC will remain the beast of college football—no matter what the Big Ten does:
1. It’s still about winning: The SEC has won five of the last seven BCS championships, and has the early favorite (Alabama) for 2010. The Big Ten has one championship since the BCS series was implemented in the 1998 season, and adding any combination of teams won’t suddenly make the league stronger on the field.
2. Better players: A southward population surge—away from the Big Ten stronghold in the Midwest—is one of the reasons the Big Ten is considering expansion. But any move south (Georgia Tech is starting to get thrown around as an outside candidate) won’t automatically help the Big Ten compete in the talent-rich recruiting states of Florida, Georgia and Louisiana.
