GWC – Middle ground disappearing – Childers in no man’s land
McCain, in a desperate bid to hold onto his Senate seat this year in Arizona, is himself renouncing as fast as he can the bipartisan tendencies that won him the GOP presidential nomination just two years ago. He is backtracking from previous stands on controversial issues, such as immigration reform, that have put him at odds with the far right in his party.
Meanwhile, in Mississippi, Democratic Rep. Travis Childers is caught in no man’s land. He has to run away from his national party and has consistently voted the conservative instincts of his district, but Childers still may lose in November because he doesn’t have the right label in front of his name.
When moderates — whether Republican or Democrat — have no political home, gridlock in Washington is the inevitable byproduct. No matter which party is in power, it cannot rule effectively without occasionally getting support for its initiatives from some on the other side.
