Mississippi Public Service Commission considers Rate Payer Bill of Rights
JACKSON, MS — Approximately 100 people attended a May 4 hearing in Jackson for the Public Service Commission’s proposed Rate Payer Bill of Rights that would apply to water, natural gas, sewer, electricity and telephone services, which are regulated by the Commission.
The Commission heard from utility companies and members of the public.
Provisions in the bill include the “option to speak with a live company representative, during the company’s normal business hours, rather than using the automated system;” the right to be reconnected within 24 hours after the balance is paid on an account; and, the right to negotiate for deferred payment plans.
Commission Chairman Brandon Presley proposed an initial version of a Rate Payer Bill of Rights in Jan. 2009, and hopes the bill can be passed by the Commission’s June meeting.
