MSMS gears up to host Republican debate

Participating students at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science will get a unique lesson in politics Tuesday when all three Republican candidates for Mississippi’s First Congressional seat debate in Columbus.

Alan Nunnelee, Henry Ross and Angela McGlowan have all agreed to discuss issues facing the First District, state and country from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Rent Auditorium on the Mississippi University for Women campus. Admission is open to the public.

The debate was conceived and arranged by the Young Republicans club at MSMS. Two student members approached Nunnelee, a state senator, when he was in Columbus in January on a three-city tour to announce his candidacy, said Bobby Jarrell, a math teacher at MSMS and sponsor for the Young Republicans.

“They mentioned to him they’d like to host a debate,” said Jarrell.
