LAUREL — A bill that would have strengthened the penalties for unlawfully passing a school bus died in conference Saturday prior to legislators taking a break until late April.

State Sen. Chris McDaniel (R-Ellisville) introduced the bill he called “Nathan’s Law.” The bill’s namesake, Nathan Key, was a 5-year-old Jones County student who was killed in December as he was exiting a school bus near his home on Houston Road.

When reached by phone, McDaniel blamed State Rep. Ed Blackmon (D-Canton), chairman of the House Judiciary A Committee, for “negotiating in bad faith.”
