Efficient ’85 Villanova team mounted tourney’s greatest upset
“After we beat Memphis State in our semifinal and then Georgetown beat St. John’s, we were over the moon,” says Dwayne McClain, a senior forward on that Wildcats team. “We knew we could play with Georgetown. St. John’s had beaten us three times that year, and we had more trouble with them.
“We wanted to play Georgetown.”
And so the Wildcats did, 25 years ago April 1, and wrote their names in the record book.
The 1984-85 season is remembered as the one when St. John’s and Georgetown passed the No. 1 ranking back and forth during the year and smart alecks were asking, as March neared its conclusion, why the Big East was playing a late-season tournament in Lexington, Ky., and who invited the Memphis State Tigers to it, anyway.
