Barbour names Brenda F. Mitchell to 11th Circuit DA

GOVERNOR BARBOUR APPOINTS MITCHELL
TO 11TH CIRCUIT DISTRICT ATTORNEY POST

Jackson, Mississippi – Governor Haley Barbour today announced the appointment of Brenda F. Mitchell as District Attorney in the 11th Circuit Court District, which includes Bolivar, Coahoma, Quitman, and Tunica counties. Mitchell, who currently serves as interim district attorney, will begin her new duties immediately.

Mitchell has served as interim district attorney since Laurence Y. Mellen resigned the position Dec. 31, 2009; a special election will be held on Nov. 2 to fill the remainder of the term, which ends January 2012.

“Ms. Mitchell is well-suited for this position with her background as a dedicated public servant in the Mississippi Delta,” Governor Barbour said. “She brings extensive criminal legal experience and knowledge to her new role as the top prosecutor.”

Mitchell has served as assistant district attorney since 1995. Previously, she was a staff attorney for North Mississippi Rural Legal Services in Cleveland and Clarksdale. Mitchell also was a legal consultant for the Center for Constitutional Rights in Greenville.

She is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association and the Mississippi Prosecutors Association.

Mitchell studied criminal justice at Mississippi Delta Community College and earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Mississippi. She received her law degree from Mississippi College School of Law.

Governor Barbour’s Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee reviewed applications and recommended Mitchell.
