Nunnelee out raises Childers in 4th QT

Rep. Travis Childers’ support appears to be evaporating, as GOP challenger Alan Nunnelee pulled off the rare feat of out-raising the incumbent during the 4th Quarter of 2009.

The Daily Journal’s Patsy Brumfield reports:

“Nunnelee, a Republican, said he’d raised $420,000 in the first five months of his campaign with more than $201,000 coming in the fourth quarter of 2009. Childers, a Democrat, said he has more than $550,000 in hand out of the roughly $850,000 he’s raised so far in this election cycle.”

After the 3rd Quarter, Childers reported about $736,000 in total contributions for the election cycle and $721,000 in net contributions; he had about $507,000 left in the bank.

After doing the math, it seems Childers – at best – raised about $129,000 in the 4th Quarter, meaning that Nunnelee out-raised him by at least $70,000.

Further, Childers’ cash-on-hand jumped by just $37,000 in the 4th Quarter.

It’s no surprise, then, that the independent handicappers at the Rothenberg Political Report now rate Mississippi’s 1st District as “Toss-Up/Tilt Republican,” and Tim Sahd at the National Journal’s “House Race Hotline” ranks Childers as the 4th-most endangered incumbent in the country – from either political party.
