Open meetings bill spurred by illegal dinner
An illegal dinner meeting between two state transportation commissioners and two Madison County officials has spurred legislation aimed at cracking down on individual violators of the state’s Open Meetings Act.
A bill known as the “Meetings Accountability Act” has been introduced in the state Legislature and, if approved, would levy fines of up to $1,000 against any public official who violates the Open Meetings Act.
In October, Northern District Transportation Commissioner Bill Minor and Southern District Transportation Commissioner Wayne Brown were found guilty of violating the Open Meetings Act when they met with Madison County’s District 2 Supervisor Tim Johnson and County Engineer Rudy Warnock at a Jackson restaurant to discuss funding for the Reunion interchange.
