RGA gears up for 2010 races

The Republican Governors Association is reorganizing itself for 2010 to build a larger in-house political operation — part of an effort to cut costs while staying competitive in the 37 gubernatorial races this year.

The RGA will announce seven new hires on Wednesday, six of whom are regional political directors — the first time in the group’s history that it will have such positions.

The move is designed to cut down on consultant fees in three dozen gubernatorial races in 2010, but the RGA says it also wants to build a veteran political team to counsel GOP candidates.

“Our work won’t just be farmed out to a bunch of different folks. It’ll be quality in-house work,” said RGA Executive Director Nick Ayers. “We’ll have a huge political budget, more than double the size it was in 2006, and we’re going to do it with good intelligence and with folks on the ground where it is legally permissible.”
