The Tiger We Thought We Knew

The Tiger We Thought We Knew

When I got off a plane shortly before midnight Friday, near gate C74 at Newark Liberty International Airport, the first thing I saw was a large, lightbox advertisement featuring Tiger Woods.

He was standing on a golf course, staring down forlornly into a chasm, searching for something he may have lost, presumably his golf ball. “It’s what you do next that counts,” the caption read.
It occurred to me that that might be the last of those ads I would see at an airport for a very long time. Earlier that evening, Mr. Woods had posted his shocking announcement that he was taking an indefinite break from professional golf to work on his life game a bit and to recover from the damage caused by his “infidelities.” It’s not clear whether his endorsement career can survive this.
