Gov. Barbour says Mississippi’s tax revenue plunged in November

OXFORD — Mississippi tax collections continued their free fall in November as revenues dropped 6.9 percent below already-dismal projections, further evidence that the state’s economy is nowhere near recovery from the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

November tax collections were $24.8 million below projections the Legislature and Gov. Haley Barbour made before the 2009 legislative session adjourned five months ago.

“November’s revenue report is further confirmation of what we have known for months: Mississippi’s state budget will not recover from this recession any time soon,” Barbour said Tuesday.
