He came to Florida State more than 30 years ago and saved the program.

And now, joylessly, he must leave Florida State in order to save the program.
Unless he has a last-minute change of heart, Bobby Bowden, the greatest college football coach we have ever known, will likely announce his retirement today. Yes, there will be those who say the legendary Bowden is being forced out by impatient fans, disgruntled boosters and a budget-strapped administration. And maybe that’s all true. But, in the end, Bobby had to make the ultimate decision. And, finally, it appears he has made the right one.
