Race may be Travis Childers’ to lose
After Saturday’s “no” vote on the House health care overhaul, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers may have an early edge over State Sen. Alan Nunnelee in the First District race.
Had Childers voted with his party, Republicans would have certainly labeled him as Nancy Pelosi’s lap dog and conservative voters may have brushed him off as just that.
But even Republican die-hards are grasping at straws to tie Childers to the national party. Statistically, he has voted with his brethren about 80 percent of the time. But stats can be misleading. On key votes, Childers has shown he isn’t afraid to be his own man — or at least his own Blue Dog.
Sure, Childers voted for House Speaker Pelosi and Republicans are quick to remind voters of that. But that alone won’t be enough to sink him. Besides, a vote against Pelosi would have been political suicide for the rookie representative.
