Politico – Barbour, Rendell offer split takes
Govs. Haley Barbour, a Republican from Mississippi, and Ed Rendell, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, offered different takes Sunday on Tuesday’s election results and House passage of a health care reform bill Saturday night.
Rendell said he’d “like to see more cost controls in the bill,” but called the House vote “a huge step forward,” while Barbour said Republicans should have no problem with being the `Party of No’ on President Barack Obama’s plan.
“Most people in America don’t want this so to be the people that defeat it will be popular,” Barbour said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Barbour also disagreed with the White House’s position that New York’s 23rd Congressional District race – in which the Republican candidate was pushed out by conservatives – shows “moderates need not apply” in the GOP. He pointed to New Jersey governor-elect Chris Christie as a moderate who won 94 percent of the Republican vote.
“It was a great night for Republicans,” Barbour said.
Republican Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi dodged a question Sunday about whether former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin could be president and declined to rule himself out of the 2012 lineup.
“I don’t have any plans to [run for president], but I wouldn’t consider it until the elections of 2010 are over,” Barbour said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “But you know my wife doesn’t always agree with me either.”
When asked if he believes Palin could be president, Barbour was more dismissive. When host David Gregory first posed the question, Barbour talked over it.
