LAST WEEK’S victory over Alcorn State was important for the Southern Miss football program in several ways.

It got the season off to a good start, continuing the Golden Eagles’ good play from the latter part of the 2008 season.
It was a win over another Mississippi school.
It was historic in that the two schools had never played each other in football.
It drew the largest crowd in the history of M.M. Roberts Stadium.
But, this week’s game against Central Florida, at 6 p.m. Saturday, also at Roberts Stadium, is even more important. The reason is simple. It is a Conference USA game, and these games can lead to a championship.

It will be an early Conference USA game. Win, and you’re off to a good start in the league. Not a great start, but a good start. Lose, and you’re fighting an uphill battle. Not an insurmountable battle, but still a battle.
