Prosecutors seek to limit Warr evidence

GULFPORT — Federal prosecutors argue in court documents filed late Friday that former Mayor Brent Warr and his wife, Laura, should be prohibited from presenting evidence at their Katrina fraud trial aimed at showing other property owners received grant funds under circumstances similar to those that led to charges against the Warrs.

The government alleges the Warrs fraudulently claimed they lived in beachfront home when Katrina hit so they could secure a $150,000 homeowner grant, along with FEMA relief funds. The Warrs maintain they considered the home their “primary residence,” even though Laura Warr and their two children still slept at a home owned by Brent Warr’s mother. The beachfront home had been undergoing extensive renovations after the Warrs bought it in January 2004.
