McMillin being considered as Byram police chief

Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin could get a second shot at holding the dual roles of sheriff and police chief.

McMillin, who spent about 1 1/2 years as both sheriff and chief of Jackson police, is being considered for chief of police in Byram, which became a city about a month ago.

“I think it’s an option that the governing authorities in Byram will want to consider very carefully,” said Byram’s attorney, Jerry Mills.

Byram by law must have a police chief, Mills said.

Because the Sheriff’s Department serves Byram and will continue to do so for at least the next year, it makes sense for McMillin to assume the role, Mills said.

The city can’t pay a police chief until it has worked out a budget for fiscal 2010, Mills said.
