Nunnelee ousts Sen. Dearing from Appropriations subcommittee

Sen. Bob Dearing is out as chairman of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee handling the state Department of Transportation’s budget. That’s according to Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, who appoints the appropriations subcommittee chairmen.

Questioned about whether Dearing decided to leave his post, Nunnelee confirmed that “Yes, I decided for him.”

Dearing, D-Natchez, apparently pulled a no-no earlier this year when he suggested on the Senate floor that negotiations on the overall budget would progress if the chamber appointed new negotiators. Nunnelee led the Senate negotiating team.

Nunnelee said there were “a lot of things” that factored into his decision to oust Dearing. He said he didn’t want to go into detail.
