MSU’s Cohen feeling the scholarship squeeze … but quietly

This is the time of year when college baseball coaches sharpen up their math skills.

It’s that time when guys like Mississippi State’s John Cohen retreat from the oppressive heat outside to the cool confines of his office, poring over a roster that he must somehow reconcile with the scholarship restrictions that would quickly raise the ire of his predecessor, Ron Polk.
Polk, now a volunteer assistant at UAB, doesn’t like the 11.7-scholarship limit set on baseball teams. And that total must be divvied among no more than 27 players – that number is reduced from 30 players this past year – and each player must receive at least a one-fourth scholarship.
