Twenty years ago last week, Barry Switzer’s college football career ended. Switzer’s departure from OU also signaled the end of another gridiron institution.

Few teams have run the ’bone in the last 20 years, mostly service academies, and OU bailed on it in 1989, Year 1 of Gary Gibbs’ six-year run as coach. Don’t blame Gibbs. Switzer himself had said that March that the ’bone might be scrapped.
