The Senate has for too long allowed Barbour to dictate its positions when negotiating over Medicaid funding policies. It’s time for Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant to step up and lead more effectively.
Barbour has for years been right to demand a hospital assessment and right in recent days to fight to retain the ability to make Medicaid budget cuts if necessary.
But Barbour must also resist the temptation to allow political enmity with the Hospital Association to cloud his judgment in making compromises that protect hospitals to the greatest extent possible.
It’s time to finish the budget.
