Pinehurst 1999: Drama on and off the course

PINEHURST Phil Mickelson stood on the 17th tee at Pinehurst No.2 that Sunday afternoon 10 years ago, tied with Payne Stewart for the lead in a U.S. Open he hadn’t intended to play.
Mickelson was separated by two holes from his first major championship and by more than 2,000 miles from his wife, Amy, who was at home in Scottsdale, Ariz., on the verge of giving birth to their first child.
Five days earlier, Mickelson, 29, had been at home with a ragged golf game and no expectation of playing in Pinehurst, having decided to stay with Amy.
